"Our Farm is Our Home"
The Land
We bought our first 12 acres in 1990, with 1000 dollars down and owner financing. It was good land, but covered in cedar. We cut a road in, pitched a tent, and started working. Soon we had a greenhouse up and the shell of a cabin built. Since then we’ve cleared the land, bought 18 more acres next to us, and built our business from the ground up. Each step we took had to pay for the next step. Last fall (2003) we took the huge step of buying 100 more acres of farmland two mile down the road. It has 2 beautiful fields and a great location for our farm market on the corner of two state roads.
Growing Practices
We believe in environmentally sound farming, using sustainable methods that leave our land a better place every year. We use organic compost as our fertilizer source, and we believe that the basis to healthy farming is healthy soil. A complex, living soil creates an environment that favors beneficial microbes and other organisms that in turn improve plant growth. Healthy plants resist pests and diseases better, and we use little or no chemical sprays or fertilizers. We allow the fence rows and uncultivated areas to grow naturally as a habitat for beneficial insects and animals. This has created a balance at our farm that limits pest problems, and also provides habitat for a great variety of bird life. Indigo buntings, red wing blackbirds and many other birds nest in our fields. Seasonal visitors include goldfinches, purple finches and the occasional vermillion flycatcher! Broad-winged hawks have nested on our farm since 1993.
Our Philosophy
The number of farmers in America has dwindled to less than 2 percent of the population as farms are consolidated or move out of the country. We believe that people should know who grows their food and plants, and that small family farms are an integral part of the rural community in America. Small family farms have led the way in soil conservation and organic and sustainable farming, and they add a lot to the overall quality of life in their communities and even the large cities nearby. We want to be able to provide our customers and community a way to feel connected to agriculture in general and our farm in particular.
Our Home
Yes, we really do live in the bright blue house on our logo! We like color, lots of color!
